Chennai rains: Drones come to the rescue of people stranded in isolated areas

Chennai has come to a standstill due to water-logging after heavy rains. The flood has adversely impacted the local infrastructure, including power and communication lines among other services. While rescue operations are still on, Chennai Police are using drones to locate people stuck in certain inaccessible parts of the city. With the help of drones, Police have been able to locate and rescued as many as 200 people, reports The Hindu. According to a senior Police official, the drones were operated from a control vehicle and the images obtained from the drone were diverted to the control room. They further narrowed down to the area and volunteers at the nearest spot were alerted that enabled them to reach the stranded people. This is not the first time drones have been used by for rescue operations. Drones were deployed to rescue people stranded in forests, hills and other isolated areas in Badrinath and Kedarnath, which had borne the brunt of floods and landslides in June this year.

While Army and Navy have stepped up the rescue efforts, individuals as well as tech companies have also joined in. Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature to allow the flood affected people in Chennai to mark themselves safe . Google also has also dedicated crisis response tool for those affected in Chennai rains.
