China’s Internet services firm APUS Group will set up a global R&D and technical support centre in India and hire 350 to 500 people over the next three years.
APUS flagship product allows Android operating system users to customize their smartphone home screens. Last week, APUS had announced its partnership with Indian mobile advertising platform InMobi to foray into the Indian market. “APUS Group plans to foray into India by setting up an operations centre, global R&D centre and a technical support centre in the country. The initiative is expected to create around 350-500 jobs in the next three years,” the company said in a statement.
The centre will be at the forefront of R&D and technical support operations for the APUS Group globally, it added. APUS, which customizes Android software, has 250 million users worldwide and the number is expected to grow to 300 million by the end of the year and further to 500 million by 2016-end. APUS believes the move will help achieve the target of growing the user base to 80 million in India in the next 12 months from over 25 million, at present.
The developer is also looking at providing more localized services and experience to domestic users and augment India specific content to appeal the target audience, it added. As an emerging country, India’s market potential is great, adding that smartphone usage increasing rapidly with only 10 per cent of Indian population using them, APUS Group founder and CEO Li Tao said. “We had similar situation in China three to five years ago. India represents a crucial market for us and we are confident that our initiatives will only strengthen our relationship with the country,” Li added.
APUS is looking to make India its anchor centre for Asia and further strengthen its presence as its evaluates more partnership opportunities with Indian firms.
