Close to half of US calls in 2019 are expected to be scam calls

Third-party blocking apps are not effective against new scam call techniques

The number of scam calls are only increasing, and according to a new study, they are said to account for about 50 percent of the calls in US in 2019. Based on a report published by First Orion on PR Newswire, the number of scam calls in US increased by 3.7 percent in 2018 to 29.2 percent, but it is expected to rise to 44.6 percent in 2019.

First Orion claims to have come up with the number by carefully analyzing over 50 billion scam calls made to US subscribers in over the past 18 months. The company is better known to provide protection plans to a number of cellular service provider across North America.

In its report, the company states that it’s become a little difficult to track scammers as they have adapted to a new technique called Neighborhood Spoofing, where the scammer disguises their phone number as a local number on the recipient’s caller ID. This increases the probability of the person picking up the call. First Orion also mentions that third-party blocking apps are not able to track such calls, as they are designed to work effectively against black-listed scam numbers and not temporarily hijacked numbers.

First Orion believes that in order to compete against the rising number of scam calls, the industry needs to adapt and implement effective call protection solutions.  The company recently developed and deployed its new CallPrinting technology, which is touted to identify the new scam techniques and prevent such calls from rising in number. Its intelligent analysis provides users with real-time decisions against spoofing tactics.

First Orion in April also testified in front of Congress stating its case for consumer protection against scam calls and is also working with a number of the carrier companies to find better solutions for it. Charles D. Morgan, CEO and Head Data Scientist of First Orion was quoted in the report saying, “Recently, the FCC joined forces with several technology companies, including First Orion, to find a way to combat these calls, but we still see rampant increases. After working closely with several carriers, we’ve found that in-network solutions that leverage sophisticated data analysis and machine learning are by far the most accurate way to pinpoint the origin of a call and identify it before it reaches your phone.”
