The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has released its newest report on the growth of mobile user base in India for July 2018. According to the data, private telecom service providers (member TSPs) have a total of 1,004.08 million mobile subscribers.
Among these subscribers, the highest at 344.88 million belong to Bharti Airtel, while 223.34 million subscribers are customers of Vodafone India at the second spot. As for the circle that has the highest number of subscribers has turned out to be UP (East) circle which has managed to remain at the top of the list with a total of 86.74 million subscribers.
Rajan S Mathews, Director General, COAI commented about the increasing user base of the India’s mobile subscribers and said, “India is today at the cusp of digital revolution, buoyed by the Government’s Digital India initiative and other programs. As the country prepares itself for next-gen technologies such as 5G, the role of the telecom sector with further evolve and advance. The Government and the industry is working in tandem to ensure last mile connectivity to every person, which in turn will open up a plethora of opportunities for everybody.”
He added, “The National Digital Communications Policy 2018 had also recommended several measures to alleviate the financial distress, the sector is reeling under. The growth seen in mobile subscriber base this month is encouraging, and the industry is working ensure that connectivity reaches the farthest corners of the country.”

These numbers that have been presented by the COAI exclude the subscriber numbers of BSNL, MTNL, Tata and Reliance Communication. And it needs to be kept in mind that these numbers are not an indication of how many actual people are using mobile phones because an individual can have more than one mobile phone number.
