Portable Bluetooth speakers are in abundance – available in various sizes and shapes, and also in flexible price points. The affordable ones mostly focus on Bluetooth connectivity, while by paying a bit more, you can get few additional features. Creative s latest Bluetooth speaker is the MUVO 2, which brings some interesting features to the table. Also Read - Creative Outlier Air Review: Well priced truly wireless earbuds

Priced at Rs 8,499, it is available to purchase from Amazon India, and in some offline retail stores. It s closest competitors are the JBL Flip 3, Bose SoundLink Color and Sony SRS-XB3. Features such as the built-in music player, splash resistant capabilities and USB audio are something that add a little weight to the MUVO 2. But does it offer impressive performance for the price? Let s find out. Also Read - DxOMark has received offers of money to review cameras on many occasions

Creative MUVO 2 Design and Features

Creative has gone with a simple design for the MUVO 2; the body is made from thick plastic and the build quality is pretty robust. You have the attractive Creative logo nicely sitting on the front speaker grill, the control buttons placed on the top for easy access, and the connectivity ports at the back. The MUVO 2 includes two tweeters and a small subwoofer. ALSO READ: Brainwavz M3 Review

The power button, a Bluetooth pairing mode button, the mode switch to toggle between Bluetooth, aux-in and other modes are placed on the top. You also have volume and play / pause buttons that let you control the music playback, right from the Bluetooth speaker. Just above the buttons you have two LED lights one to indicate battery level, and other to indicate the mode. These buttons have a distinct hexagonal shape and are made from rubber, offering a nice look and feel to it. There s also a built-in microphone, allowing you to take phone calls on the speaker. The MUVO 2 features Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity with support for A2DP. At the back, you have a 3.5mm aux-in jack, a microUSB port for charging and USB audio input to use with PC or laptop, and a microSD card slot. The MUVO 2 is also IP66 certified for water and dust resistance, and there s a small rubber flap at the back to ensure water doesn t enter inside the connectivity ports.

One of the best things about the MUVO 2 is the built in music player that supports a wide range of audio formats such as MP3, WAV, WMA and FLAC too. This means you don’t need a smartphone to enjoy your favorite music on the go — you can play music directly using a microSD card. Just ensure that the microSD card is formatted in NTFS file system, as it cannot read the Fat32 file system. To keep things ticking, the Bluetooth speaker features a 2,200mAh battery rated at 8.14Wh, which Creative claims to offer battery life of up to 10 hours on a single charge. It is offered in four different color options blue, red, grey and black. ALSO READ: Audio Technica ATH-E40 In-Ear Monitor Headphones Review

Creative MUVO 2 Performance

During my review period, I tested the MUVO 2 by playing songs over Bluetooth from my smartphone and iPod touch, from a microSD card, and also from my laptop, via USB audio. Talking about performance, the MUVO 2 will completely surprise you with its sound quality. It s impressive how loud the speaker can get without causing distortion, even at full volume. It has a very wide soundstage and offers an immersive audio experience. The audio quality is very detailed, highs and lows are fantastic, but the only minor issue is with the mid-range.

For the review, my focus tracks were – Oceanlab s – Breaking Ties, The Eagles – Hotel California, Interstellar s – Mountains, and Pink Floyd s – Time. Besides these, I also played various Bollywood tracks, EDM music, and some instrumental music while using the Bluetooth speaker. Irrespective of the genre of music I played, the MUVO 2 was able to handle everything with ease. ALSO READ: Audeze Sine on-ear headphones review

Starting with Breaking Ties, the vocals in the song were pretty clear with no signs of distortion even at full volume. Even the minutest details from drums playing in the background, to occasional bells ringing, everything sounds perfect. Moving on to Hotel California, the crisp high tones on the intro guitar solo, to the bassy bongos, the speaker delivers good quality. At times, it made me felt like enjoying the concert live.

Next, I played Mountains from Interstellar OST. Right from the intro with the clocks ticking, to the gradually increasing volume and strong bass, it s a pleasure listening to the track. The soundstaging is also neat perfect giving you a surround sound experience. However, my only issue here was minor distortion after cranking the volume to full, but on slightly lowering it, things were good.

Lastly, Pink Floyd s Time from Dark Side of the Moon is one of the songs I like to play on every audio product I m testing. It has almost everything that one could test. The sound of clocks in the beginning, drums and vocals as the song progresses, the bass and stereo separation, everything sounds in place, and there s nothing to complain about. In terms of battery life, I was able to use the speaker for a little above eight hours on full charge. It is less than what Creative claims, but then there are certain scenarios to consider, such as the Bluetooth range and volume, among other parameters.

Verdict

The Creative MUVO 2 is a solid performer – one of the best Bluetooth speakers I ve come across, especially in the sub Rs 10,000 range. The impressive audio performance, the sturdy design, and the built-in audio player that can play MP3, WMA and FLAC files from a microSD card are the pros going in its favor.

Add the water and dust resistant capabilities along with long battery life, and the Creative MUVO 2 is a value for money proposition. I ve previously used the JBL Charge and JBL Pulse that were priced in the same range. While the Charge was also capable of being used as a power bank, the Pulse was on the funkier side with the LED lights. However, they both lacked features and audio quality was sub-par, making the Creative MUVO 2 a better overall product.
