Twitter has announced that cross-posting of tweets to Facebook is no longer active as of today. While tweets will obviously continue to show on Twitter and can be manually posted on Facebook by copying the URL of the tweet, this is no longer an automatic process. Twitter stated that this is the case because of changes at Facebook that now prevent automatic posting.

The feature was popular for users, since it allowed them to have their tweet automatically posted as a status update on their Facebook timelines as soon as they tweeted it on Twitter. While many users will obviously be inconvenienced by having to manually post tweets to Facebook, the step will come as relief for a lot of users who might not have wanted to see tweets on Facebook.

This specific matter has to do with the fact that Facebook has started plugging security holes after the Cambridge Analytica scandal earlier this year that revealed just how unsecure user data is on the popular social media platform. Although Twitter cross-posts aren’t really a security threat per se, it is an unfortunate fall-out of moves to secure Facebook’s API platform.

While the option to connect a Facebook account for tweet sharing is still visible on Twitter, it will likely go away in the coming days considering it’s essentially redundant as of now. The issue has affected not just Twitter, but various other apps that also automatically post to Facebook, even with the permission of the user through a single perpetual login.
