Cyanogen is working on making the OS more intuitive to enhance the user experience devices running on Cyanogen OS 13. The company has started teasing its new post-app era with which it aims to integrate in its future OS releases. The mods will be directly built into the OS, thus eliminating the need of separately downloading the apps. These mods will be rolled out next month on devices running Cyanogen OS 13 and above. The company has created a brand new, dedicated website called mod.life to highlight the features of what it calls the post-app era. As of now, the website showcases six such apps that will come integrated within the OS. With this move, app developers will get an opportunity to partner Cyanogen and get their mods on the platform. The implementation of this new feature is likely to be on the lines of Around YU, which we recently saw on YU s Yutopia smartphone.
First one is the Truecaller Mod which will be natively built in the dialer and messenger apps. It will help users identify incoming calls and texts, thus allowing users to block the unwanted ones. Next up is the social lock screen, which will offer the latest news feed from your social networks, including Facebook, Instagram and more. It is important to note that Facebook already had already tried something similar with its home launcher, which didn t click well with the users.
Next is the Skype mod which will let users seamlessly upgrade the ongoing phone call to Skype video call with their Skype contacts. There s also Cortana mod, which will come deeply integrated into the Cyanogen OS with hands-free activation. The virtual personal assistant will let you do everything from setting reminders and alarms to scheduling meetings, to calling and texting with your voice. You can also ask Cortana to take a selfie or photo, which will open the camera app and start the countdown timer. Once the photo is clicked, it will be saved to the gallery.
The other ones are OneNote and Hyperlapse mods. While OneNote mod will quickly let you jot down notes and access them on all your devices where OneNote is installed. The Hyperlapse Mod will be built into the native camera app. It will allow you take fast action videos and also let you edit them by altering the speed, save and share on social media. Besides these, more mods are expected in the coming months.
Cyanogen is also inviting OEMs and hardware brands to partner with it for ‘Mod Ready’ devices. Initially only these devices will get the Mod experience apart from devices that are already running Cyanogen OS 13 and higher.
