Cyanogen has finally succeeded in raising a much needed $80 Million funding. BGR India had earlier reported that Cyanogen is intending to raise another round of investment led by Premji Invest. After several rounds of talks, Cyanogen managed to raise $80 million funding with Twitter Ventures, Qualcomm Incorporated, Telefonica Ventures, Smartfren Telecom and Rupert Murdoch participating in the round. Cyanogen has been attracting quite a lot of attention as it has successfully created an Android version that comes sans the Google services. Smartphone manufacturer are trying to steer away from the traditional Android system to an alternative that lets them have more control and less restrictions over the operating system. Cyanogen has two versions of its operating system, the first one is an Android based operating system ROM called CyanogenMod that users can install on their Android smartphones after unlocking the bootloader. The another one being the commercial version, where Cyanogen has partnered with smartphone brands like Micromax, OnePlus and OneTouch Alcatel.
Microsoft was rumored to be participating in this latest investment round but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Instead, Microsoft has announced a partnership with Samsung, Dell and some other Android OEMs to pre-install its services and apps in their Android tablets. The Samsung Galaxy S6 too comes pre-installed with Microsoft apps and features 100GB if additional OneDrive storage.
