Cyanogen had a good run in the smartphone industry as it aimed to make a better Android version than what Google offers. Cyanogen officially stopped its custom ROM services last December, but the company could soon be launching again. This time now in the smartphone industry though. According to an Axios report, Cyanogen is re-branding itself as Cyngn, and is now focusing on developing software for self-driving cars. The speculations come from Cyngn’s website, and the job listings of its employees. If you head over to Cyngn’s official website you will see the entire focus is laid on autonomy. The website also reads, “Very soon autonomous machines will be everywhere, in surprising places, exciting new form factors both unexpected and delightful. CYNGN is bringing this world to life, animating the inanimate and delivering the future now.”

Moving on to the job listing, Cyngn is hiring professionals for locations including Palo Alto in California and Singapore. Job listings are for positions such as Autonomous System Software, perception, Mapping, Autonomous Driving Engineer, and Lead Autonomous Driving. Considering the autonomous driving fields Cyngn is hiring people for, it does hint at the possibility of self-driving cars. Not just this, but a recent permit for the company to test self-driving cars from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles also add to the possibility. As per Cyngn’s current employee records, people from auto companies like Mercedes-Benz and China’s Future Mobility have joined. Self-driving cars are a technology yet to take full birth in the commercial zone. Companies like Tesla, and Google’s Waymo are the present pioneers in self-driving car technology.
