Google just announced the latest version of its mobile operating system Android, the Android 9 Pie last week. The company started uploading the source code of Android 9 Pie on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) hours after the announcement. Days after Google announced the Android 9 Pie OTA for its Pixel lineup, other smartphone makers started announcing the timelines for the Android 9 Pie upgrade for their devices. However, the updates for most smartphone makers are still months away and some users and developers can t really wait that long. According to a report by XDA Developers, some developers took it on themselves to download the source code from AOSP and then try to port Android 9 Pie on their devices. the report pointed out that developers have successfully ported the latest operating system to Xiaomi Mi 3 and Mi 4 along with Mi 4X. Both the Mi 3 and Mi 4 share the common device code cancro which means that any ROM made for one device will work on the other device. Almost everything is working on both of the devices except users are not able to increase or decrease the volume of the headphone. For perspective, the report goes on to point out that Xiaomi announced Mi 3 in 2013 and Mi 4 in 2014 while Android 9 Pie was just announced a week back. This report comes days after developers ported Android 9 Pie to Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with everything working in a stable condition.
In addition to these three devices, the report also added that developers were able to port the operating system to Redmi 4X with device code name santoni that was released back in 2017 as a successor to Redmi 3S. This device is also known as the Redmi 4 in the Indian market. The report added that the developer ported the Redmi Note 4 Android 9 Pie port to the Redmi 4 (Redmi 4X) and interested users will need to flash some patches while flashing the port.
One thing to note here is that these ports are not official and may not be as smooth as the official Android 9 Pie updates that Xiaomi is likely to roll out in coming months. If you want to install these ports on your devices then head over to XDA Developers to install the latest version of Android. However, make sure that you take a backup of all the important data on your device and it is better to not go ahead with the instructions if you don t know what you are doing.
