Did Apple miss the bus by pricing the iPhone SE for Rs 39,000 in India? No!

It took just few hours for Apple’s India fans to shower the company with praise and then criticism when it was revealed that the iPhone SE price actually costs Rs 39,000, and not Rs 30,000. But the iPhone SE still isn't a bad deal.

So, the Apple iPhone SE will launch in India next month for Rs 39,000, not Rs 30,000 as Apple had originally stated. At Rs 30,000, the iPhone SE would have simply taken the market by storm. But at Rs 39,000, is the new Apple smartphone back to becoming another ‘over-priced iPhone’? Well, I don’t believe that. Even at this price, the iPhone SE is a great deal, and here’s why.

Yes, Apple could had a golden opportunity to own the mid-range smartphone segment had the price been Rs 30,000. The pricing would have sent mid-range Android players such as Samsung and OnePlus in jitters as they finally would have to compete with Apple in their own backyard.

And not to forget that Apple’s older smartphones like iPhone 6 are selling online for almost same price. The price I think was compelling enough for customers who had been settling for older (read cheaper) iPhones to upgrade to the iPhone SE. I’d also like to believe many who have been settling for good enough mid-range Android smartphones for Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000 may have shifted to the iPhone.

But does all these change with the new price of Rs 39,000? No. What many seem to be forgetting is the iPhone SE isn’t an upgraded version of the iPhone 5S. Rather it is an iPhone 6s-like flagship smartphone in a smaller form factor. Except for the 3D Touch and a lower resolution FaceTime camera, the iPhone SE boasts of all the features equivalent, and in some cases better, to the iPhone 6s.

What do you get in the iPhone SE? The smartphone runs iOS 9.3 and is powered by the latest A9 processor and M9 co-processor, which also run on the pricier iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. It has same 12-megapixel iSight camera with 4K video support and Live Photos. The smartphone comes always on ‘Hey Siri’ along with Apple Pay support. Interestingly, the iPhone SE is said to have better battery life than the iPhone 6s. While the iPhone 6s offers 12 hours of back up on LTE and Wi-Fi, the successor is rated to deliver 13 hours of back up on the same radios.

In nutshell, the iPhone SE is as good as the iPhone 6s, which is available right now for Rs 40,000 approximately. But don’t forget the price has come down from an original launch price of a whopping Rs 62,000. In this perspective, the iPhone SE with iPhone 6s-equivalent features at launch base price of Rs 39,000 isn’t really bad of a deal. And looking at the recent trends, the price will eventually go further down with e-commerce players offering cashbacks and discounts on the device. Also, there will be several upgrade or buyback plans from Apple’s official partners in the country as well.

The new iPhone SE successfully fills the void between the latest large screen iPhones and those who clinged on to the older iPhones just for the sake of form factor. Apple hasn’t compromised on the features or performance of the iPhone SE, ensuring even at a relatively lower price it offers the uniform premium experience. For those who liked the older iPhones with smaller screens but at the same don’t want to miss out on new features, the iPhone SE is the smartphone to go for.
