Move over the super uncomfortable suits from the past as Elon Musk has attempted to reinvent how our astronomers dress for space. Musk shared the first picture of what will be the SpaceX spacesuit. The new-age spacesuit looks super stylish and sleek, and yes, it actually works. The SpaceX spacesuit is the latest effort in Musk’s ambitious space plans. SpaceX, Musk’s space firm has tested reusable supply rockets, is building next-gen spacecraft, and plans to colonize Mars. In his Instagram post, Musk stresses that the new-age spacesuit actually works. However, building the stylish spacesuit was not an easy task. Musk reportedly hired Hollywood costume designer Jose Fernandez to design the suits. He is behind costumes used in blockbusters including Batman, The Avengers, and Iron Man. In a 2015 Reddit AMA, Musk said that he wanted the spacesuits to be ‘badass’. It is worth mentioning that these spacesuits will not be used for spacewalks but help astronauts deal with cabin pressure inside the spacecraft. These are likely to be worn by astronauts aboard SpaceX’s commercial spacecraft Crew Dragon, which is expected to head to the International Space Station, and beyond for space exploration.
Unlike the current spacesuits, the fully-functional spacesuit looks straight out of some Hollywood’s sci-fi movie. As National Geographic says, spacesuits must regulate air pressure, oxygen, and temperature as well as deflect cosmic radiation, all while allowing for movement and communication. However, as space exploration takes pace, it is imperative to develop more flexible spacesuits. ALSO READ: Elon Musk and 115 experts in AI and robotics join hands to ban the killer robots
As Musk suggests, it was not an easy task to get the blend of aesthetics an functionality right. However, the suit has been already tested to double vacuum pressure. This essentially means bodily functions are less likely to be hampered with the drop in pressure at higher altitudes. Astronauts have lost fingernails as a result of the current pressurized glove design.
While we, average humans, are still far from traveling to the Red Planet, with the SpaceX spacesuit we can at least be sure that the space matter (and beings) find our astronauts stylish. ALSO READ: Elon Musk s Boring Company gets government nod to build Hyperloop between New York and DC
