Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk has already confirmed its plan to visit India next year, and even further he has now announced that hopefully Tesla will be able to make its partial presence in India by the end of 2019, with a broader expansion in 2020. Musk posted company’s plan on Twitter noting that he recently asked service team to expand locations to all population regions (not just major metros) in North America, Eastern Europe, China & Japan by end of 2019. He believes that Tesla is “missing vast geographic regions in some cases” and the company is thinking beyond North America, Europe, and China as well. In a follow-up tweet, Musk revealed a bit more about Tesla’s expansion plan. His tweet reads, “Hopefully, partial presence in India, Africa & South America end of next year, with broader expansion in 2020.”
It’s not the first time that Musk has wished for Tesla to come to India. He has been considering this for quite a while now. The company is in talks with the Government of India to start operations here. Even the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi had visited Tesla’s plant in 2015.
In 2017, Musk said due to “some challenging government regulations” they could not make the process expedite, although we saw Tesla Model X electric SUV unofficially arriving in India. It was the first Tesla ever to land in at the Mumbai port. The details of who imported the luxury SUV remained unknown.
Tesla Model X is the third electric vehicle from the company and is based on successful Model S platform. The Model X, being a SUV can easily seat 7 people and has a 17-inch touchscreen infotainment system similar to Model S. However, the most striking feature of the automobile is its Falcon Wing doors, which opens with the help of sensors and dynamically adjust itself according to the parking area.
