Google states on its doodle blog, Sir MV cared deeply about education and played a key role in founding the Government Engineering College at Bangalore in 1917, which would later be named after him. Today the modest house where he was born is considered a place of worship for locals.
Sir MV was born in 1861, and was raised in the rural village of Muddenahalli in southern Indian state of Karnataka. For his education he had to walk over 60 kilometers to Bengaluru to attend United Mission School, and ate food served at temples and used street lamps to study.
He later earned his License in Civil Engineering from the University of Bombay, and started working with the Bombay Public Works Division and joined the Indian Irrigation Commission. He was later given the opportunity to study the water supply and drainage system of Aden, which is a port city in Yemen.
