Essential, a new hardware startup from Android creator Andy Rubin, is not particularly off to a great start. IDC Research Director claimed that the company managed to sold only around 90,000 units of Essential Phone since its launch. But that has not deterred the company from launching new variants of the model. At the time of launch, the Essential PH-1 was available only in Black Moon and Pure White colors. The company announced three new colors including Ocean Depths, Stellar Gray and Copper Black in limited edition models. The new color options add depth to the offering from the startup. In addition to these five colors, Essential has also launched a model exclusively on Amazon called Halo Gray. The new Halo Gray color is not much different from the Stellar Grey color variant announced recently. The Halo Gray model features a matte grey ceramic black material and a matte silver titanium frame. In addition to the color, the Amazon-exclusive model also comes with the Alexa app preinstalled.
Essential says that the color will also be a limited edition like the other paint jobs, and it is primarily because of the difficulty in crafting a grey color ceramic material. Essential also confirms that Ocean Depth model is now available while the Stellar Grey will be released on February 20 and Copper Black will be available from February 22.
All the three models are priced at $599, which is $100 more than the standard variant in Black or White color. Essential Phone’s initial asking price was found to be too high for what it offers. Tech critics said that the smartphone had good build quality but its camera, the most important aspect of any smartphone, was found to be slow and inconsistent.
However, at new retail price of $500 and $599 for limited edition models, the Essential Phone might find a few takers in the US market. In terms of specifications, the Essential Phone features a 5.71-inch display with a resolution of 2560×1312 pixels and an aspect ratio of around 17.5:9. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chipset coupled with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage.
It also gets dual 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. The smartphone runs near-stock version of Android Oreo, and is backed by a 3,040mAh battery.
