Andy Rubin, the creator of Android who launched his own Essential PH-1 (Essential Phone)smartphone appears to be finally ready to ship the device. When launched in May, Rubin promised the Essential Phone will be available to customers in 30 days. However, that did not happen. Now, it seems the company is confident about the second launch window as it has tweeted about the availability of the smartphone in the ‘a few weeks’.

In its tweet, the company said, “We’ve been working around the clock to get our first device in your hands. See this update from Andy.” The attached letter further notes that the Essential Phone is currently undergoing testing and certification with multiple US and international carriers. It is worth mentioning that the Essential Phone received FCC certification only last month.

Unfortunately, the company has still not detailed the exact date of the availability, but going by the latest update, we can expect it to be available to customers sometime in August. To recall, the Essential Phone takes on the likes of Apple, Samsung and Google with its top-tier features. It is priced at $700 (approximately Rs 45,000). It is built with a combination of titanium and ceramic for the added strength.

In terms of specifications, it features a 5.7-inch Quad-HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top. Under the hood, it houses Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It is fuelled by a 3,040mAh battery with fast charging. The Essential Phone features a magnetic connector and wireless data transfer. Essential will ship a charging dock with the smartphone that will connect with small metal pins. ALSO READ: Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone to go on sale in late June; Ambient OS to follow Android’s open source philosophy

For photography, the Essential Phone is equipped with a dual rear-camera module featuring a pair of 13-megapixel sensors; one RGB and a second monochrome sensor with f/1.85 lens. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel front camera which is also capable of recording 4K videos. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, and GPS. The phone also ditches the standard 3.5mm headphone jack, and has a fingerprint sensor at the back.

Essential Products is currently reeling under stress as senior executives are quitting Rubin’s startup one after the other. Recently, Brian Wallace, who held the position of Vice President of marketing at Essential, exited the company. This was followed by the resignation of Andy Fouche, head of communications at the company. ALSO READ: Essential Phone by the creator of Android checks the right boxes, but would India even care?

Meanwhile, even as the Essential Phone is facing shipment delays, the company has reportedly started working on a second smartphone. From the premium approach, the company is speculated to move towards a more affordable model. A new device, spotted online at the Wi-Fi Alliance, suggests the purported smartphone could run Android Nougat 7.1.1 out-of-the-box.
