Facebook activates Safety Check Tool after Kolkata flyover bridge collapse incident

Facebook has activated its Safety Check tool after an under construction flyover bridge collapsed in Kolkata. The tool lets users in the affected area mark themselves as safe.

In a horrific incident earlier today, a portion of under construction Vivekananda flyover bridge in Burrabazar area of northern Kolkata collapsed. While the incident has left people in a state of shock, eye witnesses claim that more than 10 people feared dead and over 150 people may be trapped under the bridge. Facebook has been quick enough to activate its Safety Check Tool following the mishap.

Rescue operations have already started, and the army, police and the ambulance have reached at the accident spot to evacuate the trapped victims. Desperate attempts are also being made to lift up the fallen bridge.

Facebook users who reside nearby the affected area will receive a notification on their Facebook app. By clicking “Yes, let my friends know,” the safety check tool will send notifications to Facebook friends about their safety. Earlier also, the social network giant has activated the feature on numerous occasions when natural calamity or any incident occurred. Facebook had activated it during the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked Manipur, during Chennai floodsbombings in Nigeria and also when Paris was stunned by terrorist attacks in November last year.
