Facebook s iOS app has been in the news recently with users complaining about how it s been draining their phone s battery. Facebook, it seems, was aware of the issue all this time, and has now admitted to the battery drain issue. It has also released an app update, which is said to fix it. The update changelog doesn t mention anything about the battery drain, or the improvements that come with the update. But Facebook s engineering manager Ari Grant put up a post admitting that there was a battery drain issue. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. We are committed to continuing to improve the battery usage of our app and you should see improvements in the version released today, he wrote. He also touched upon the possible reasons behind the issue, and what Facebook had done to fix it. Also Read - Using Instagram to connect with friends? Beware! Your chats may be at risk
Reports claimed that one of the primary reasons behind the battery drain was the constant location tracking, even when one wasn t using the app. Grant however says that the battery drain is not because of the optional location tracking, and in fact there were more than one factor, including CPU Spin and silent audio sessions running in the background.
A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination. This repeated processing causes our app to use more battery than intended.
The second issue is with how we manage audio sessions. If you leave the Facebook app after watching a video, the audio session sometimes stays open as if the app was playing audio silently. This is similar to when you close a music app and want to keep listening to the music while you do other things, except in this case it was unintentional and nothing kept playing. The app isn’t actually doing anything while awake in the background, but it does use more battery simply by being awake.
Grant writes that the latest update has improvements to the CPU Spin in the network code, and it also removes the background audio completely. You can head over to the App Store to download the latest version of Facebook app.
