Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify before European Parliament: Livestream and everything you need to know

Get ready for sequel to Mark Zuckerberg's apology

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will appear before the European Parliament today. The testimony can be described as the sequel to Zuckerberg’s appearance before the US Senate and House Committee last month. During the two Congressional testimony, Zuckerberg came out almost unscathed despite the fact that some of the questions proved that older Congressman had little or no idea about how Facebook works. However, the EU might be a different scenario altogether. The EU has enacted strong privacy laws in the form of General Data Protection Regulation, which goes into effect on May 25. The GDPR is meant to give control back to users of online platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. Also Read - Instagram uses AI to automatically hide offensive comments

During the hour-long testimony, Zuckerberg is confirmed to apologize for the mistake committed by his platform. His introductory speech obtained by Business Insider reveals that Zuckerberg will maintain the same tone from last month and will apologize for not taking a “broad enough view of our responsibilities.” He is also likely to touch upon key subjects like spread of fake news, introduction of new features to fight election interference and potential abuse of user data by developers other than Cambridge Analytica.

If you watched Zuckerberg’s two day testimony which lasted for nearly 10 hours then his remarks today will seem similar. While his statements will stick to a pre-written script, members of the European Parliament are not expected to stick to script and are likely to ask really tough questions. Zuckerberg had previously declined to appear before the British parliament and even requested today’s testimony to be held in closed environment. However, after repeated request from European regulators, Zuckerberg appeared for open session which will be streamed live on the European Parliament TV channel (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/ep-live/en/other-events/video?event=20180522-1820-SPECIAL-UNKN).

Zuckerberg’s testimony is scheduled to begin at 6:20PM local time and is being held in Brussels. The livestream should start at 9:50PM IST and is expected to last at least an half and a half. According to CNET, the British Parliament has passed 50 questions to the European Parliament and those hooked to Facebook can watch the livestream of its top honcho being grilled via Facebook page of Antonio Tajani, President of the European Parliament.
