Aggressively promoting its recently launched feature of 360 degree videos in News Feed, Facebook has now introduced two new tools for publishers. Guide is a tool that offers your viewers a guided tour of 360 video while it plays, which makes it more engaging and ensures that viewers don’t miss any important detail. With this tool, publishers can set a narrative for the videos by highlighting specific points of interest in the field of view. Consequently, the Guide tool will automatically direct viewers around the video. Also Read - What happens to your Facebook account after you die?
In order to enable the Guide tool, the publisher must ensure that the ‘This video was recorded in 360 degree format’ option is checked. That will show up the ‘360 controls’ tab, toward the bottom left, an Enable Guide check box will appear, tick that. Selecting Guide will pop a ‘+Add Point’ option on the top right corner of the video, using that option, a publisher can add points of interest throughout the video, wherever necessary. Once a publisher chooses the Enable Guide tool, a viewer will see the 360 video with Guide turned on by default. However, viewers can always choose to opt out of the Guided view by simply panning or swiping out of the scene to explore the full 360-degree view on their own.
The other tool that Facebook has introduced his Heatmap, which is quite interesting as well. The Heatmap tool is a visual insights tool, which reflects which portions of a 360 video’s field of view viewers are spending the most time watching. It displays the insight like a visual map that highlights the ‘hottest’ parts of a video. For publishers who would choose to use Guide, Heatmap is an efficient way to analyze and add the point of interest for their 360 videos.
Any video that was posted on or after May 1 and has more than 50,000 unique views, will have the Heatmap analytics available for them. In order to see the Heatmap for a specific video, publishers can go to their Video Library under Publishing Tools, click on the video they want the Heatmap for, and they’ll be able to see Heatmap under the Video Insights tab for that video.
