Facebook already suggests events that are happening around you or events that are being attended by your friends. Most of the events that are suggested are also based on your interests or similar to the events you had attended in the past. Facebook’s new Featured Events improves upon the existing feature, and notify users in advance allowing them to be well prepared for the events. Facebook Events product manager Aditya Koolwal tells TechCrunch that regular Events users will receive a push notification, which will give them enough time to say what the Featured Events are, reach out to friends, and see if they want to go.
A team at Facebook will regularly review local art, entertainment, family, food and drink, learning, etc, and the same team also considers factors like location and capacity. Facebook further says that it will not list private events and only public events hosted by a page. They have a dedicated page though, where people can make their events more discoverable by people.
Facebook will not entertain events which are primarily focused on politics or worship. This probably comes in the wake of the recent controversy that surrounded Facebook’s Trending Topics section. Facebook’s curated list of trending topics was accused of being biased against certain topics and rival companies.
The feature is currently available only in 10 US cities namely Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington. There isn t any information yet whether the feature will be rolled out worldwide. Till the time Facebook expands this feature, Indian users can try out a number of apps that keep you updated about the events happening in your city. A few popular such apps are BookMyShow, EventsHigh and Little Black Book.
