In a WHO report published in 2014, India accounted for the highest estimated number of suicides in the world in the year 2012. According to the report, a large proportion of suicide deaths occurred between the ages of 15 years and 29 years. In order to tackle this issue, Facebook had launched a suicide prevention tool for those who may be struggling with self-injury or experiencing suicidal thoughts. This tool is now being rolled out in India. The suicide prevention tool in India has been launched in a partnership with AASRA and Deepika Padukone’s The Live Love Laugh Foundation. The help guide is available in India in both Hindi, English, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, Sinhalese, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and Marathi. To find the tool on Facebook, all a user needs to do is to type Suicide in the search bar on top and the Facebook Help: Suicide page will show in the drop-down. The page guides one with different help options and provides them with a suicide hotline number, in case of emergency.
The purpose of the tool is to help oneself or a friend who shows signs of self-harm or distress. One can reach out to someone in distress directly or they can be reported to Facebook, which has teams constantly patrolling website for similar cases and reviewing reports with regards to the same. Self-injury reports will be prioritized and immediate help will be sent to the person in distress.
