Amidst the range of improvements announced across its products, Facebook also took the F8 2018 event to introduce support for in-app purchases to its Instant Games platform. With in-app purchases, game developers will be able to add another form of monetization to their games, beyond advertising.
On its blog, Facebook explains that starting today, developers in the closed beta will be able to integrate in-app purchases to leverage micro-transactions in Instant Games on the main Facebook web and Android. However, this ability is currently limited to only Android versions.
Instant Games are essentially more mobile-friendly as they use HTML5 to work across Facebook and Messenger. As TechCrunch reports, Facebook had been working on the in-app purchases support for some time. It had started testing the feature around six months ago. With the introduction of in-app purchases, developers will gain access to the larger community of users on Facebook, in addition to their apps listed on standalone app stores.
As Facebook explains, the Instant Games will follow the in-app billing terms from each platform. The revenue share model is 70/30 on Facebook.com. This way, purchases made in games running on Android devices which account for 30 percent revenue share will apply after the standard mobile platform share which is Google’s own 70/30 cut, the report says.
However, this may result in developers overpricing their in-app purchases to make higher cut. To this, Facebook explains that the primary objective of adding this functionality is to build the in-app purchases in a way so that the developer partners can sustain and grow. “We’ll continue to evaluate rev/share with that goal in mind,” the company notes.

It is unclear if the in-app purchases will come to iOS anytime soon. As for web or Android developers, Facebook will open up the submission process starting May 7. It will allow them to implement the monetization features on Android and the web.
