The traditional Asus Zenfone 5, that was launched in July last year, came with 8GB internal storage and was also price at Rs 9,999. It is interesting to note, that even though the company has amped up its storage capacity to 16GB, it has chosen not to increase the price. Asus’ re-launch also strategically coincides with the Redmi Note 4G and Yu Yureka flash sale war day. Both the devices have almost similar specs and fall in a similar price range as the Asus Zenfone 5, and this might just be the company’s way to cash in on the frenzy around Yu and Xiaomi smartphones. Even though the Zenfone 5 lacks LTE support, it still is a big competitor for the two, considering 4G is still not a huge ‘consumer-puller’ feature in India yet. Yu Yureka went on sale for the first time on Amazon India atRs 8,999, and was out of stock in 3 seconds. Even Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4G was sold out on Flipkart today in 2minues 50 seconds, and is priced with a similar Rs 9,999 price tag. There were many disgruntled and disappointed buyers after these flash sales, and Asus hopes to attract these customers with the Zenfone 5 re-launch.
Apart from the storage capacity, all the other specifications of the Zenfone 5 are similar to the 8GB variant. It features an Intel s Atom Z2560 processor clocked at 1.6GHz with 2GB of RAM and PowerVR GPU. Like the name suggests, it has a 5-inch display with 720p HD resolution. With this phone, Asus introduced the PixelMaster camera, which registers up to 400 percent brighter photos and videos in low-light conditions by reducing the resolution. The 16GB variant has an expandable storage option for up to 64GB via microSD card.
The Zenfone 5 has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera for selfies. It packs a 2,110mAh battery, a little higher than the 8GB variant which packed a 2,050mAh battery. The smartphone runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box (upgradable to KitKat) and supports 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.
