In the early 20th century, father s day was proposed around the same time as Mother s Day. Proposed by Anna M. Jarvis in 1908, Father s Day was first celebrated in 1910, two years after first mother s day was celebrated. It started in Dodd’s town of Spokane, Washington when Sonora Louise Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran.
After giving birth to six children, William Smart s wife passed away and he was left to raise them all by himself. However, while Mother s Day was widely celebrated every year, Father s Day took a few years to catch on.
