Local Indian smartphone OEMs are getting inspired by major brands for designs and features and the trend is showing no signs of tempering. Look at Lava for instance, as it is walking on the same road and has launched Iris 504Q which offers gesture-based features, which were earlier seen on the Samsung devices. But the phone does not only come with gesture controls, and has an array of other noticeable features as well. Here is our first impression of the phone. The USP of the phone is the gesture sensor, and in the little time we had with the phone, it looked like Lava has done a nice job with the gesture-based controls which can be operated without tapping on the display of the phone. The gesture controls are applicable on various features like clicking photos and checking them in the gallery, browse through the music player – for switching tracks and for changing videos, and for changing the FM channels. You simply need to move your hand in to and fro motion on the front of the screen. The camera of the phone will then understand your gestures and thus guide the related features to operate accordingly. On trying it, the gesture-motion while changing images in the gallery worked smoothly most of the times, though there were instances when we would instruct it multiple times to operate; this could possibly be due to the position of hand or the lighting conditions as the camera did not recognize our actions.

In terms of the design, the Lava Iris 504Q is thin and looks pretty decent. The 5-inch IPS display is packed in an 8.4mm thick frame and weighs 140g. It is an HD display which offers 720p resolution, which offered a nice visual experience. Besides this, display comes with OGS or One Glass Solution thin screen technology. This basically jargon for the zero gap display tech or in-cell tech Apple uses on the iPhone. The body is made up of plastic, with the back has been given a matte finish. The phone feels pretty comfortable to hold and offers a strong grip as well. Talking about the back, it has an 8-megapixel camera which comes with auto-focus, flash and has a BSI sensor. The front has a 2-megapixel camera which can be used for 3G video calling as well and is prime conspirator for the gesture controls.

In terms of processor, it has a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex A7 quad-core processor supported with 1GB of RAM to sail it through, though we would only be able to talk about the performance bit once we review the device.

On software front it runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean which again is an advantage for the device, considering the user interface it offers is more less stock without the useless OEM customisations. Then there also is 4GB of internal memory which can be expanded to 32GB through microSD card. The phone has a 2000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery. We could not test the battery life in our short time with the phone.

In terms of additional features, Lava has partnered with Hungama for offering pre-loaded applications and also comes with some pre-loaded games by Gameloft.

For Rs 13,499, Lava Iris 504Q is a dual-SIM phone and has quite a bit to flaunt but to know whether it will impress the users or simply fizzle out, wait for our review of the device. We’d wager that it will compete with the likes of the Micromax Canvas HD, but still we’d suggest waiting for the final review.
