Flipkart Billion Capture+ First Impressions: Of dual cameras and stock Android

Flipkart’s first smartphone debuts in a highly competitive price segment. Can it succeed? Here are our first impressions.

In an already overcrowded smartphone price segment, there s yet another new entrant Flipkart. Under its Billion branding, the e-commerce site launched a smartphone called Capture+. While it may not have the most innovative of names, the new smartphone does offer a competitive set of specifications and features at an aggressive price. But will that be enough to compete against smartphones from companies like Xiaomi or Lenovo? Having spent a bit of time with it, here are my first impressions of the Flipkart Billion Capture+. The Billion Capture+ has been launched in two variants 32GB with 3GB RAM priced at Rs 10,999, and 64GB with 4GB RAM priced at Rs 12,999. The smartphone is set to go on sale via Flipkart later this week on November 15. In this price segment, smartphones these days look like offsprings of a single ancestor, and the Billion Capture+ is no different. You get the familiar metal body design, and a front that is wrapped under 2.5D curved glass. The volume rocker and power button are on the right, the SIM card tray on the left, and a 3.5mm audio jack at the top. At the bottom are the speaker grilles, and a USB Type-C port. At the front, the screen takes up most of the space, with the company opting for on-screen buttons. At the back is the dual-camera module, a fingerprint sensor in the center, and smartphone logos towards the bottom. While the design is uninspiring at best, there are no complaints about build quality.

flipkart-billion-capture-plus-bgr-3The display features a full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution, and Flipkart has stuck with the traditional aspect ratio. The screen is bright enough with decent viewing angles, and text looked sharp too. My only grouch is that the screen is a fingerprint magnet, and the glass is quite reflective even when using indoors.

Under the hood is a trusted Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC, which is found on the popular Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 as well. Paired with 3GB or 4GB of RAM, performance shouldn t be a major concern. What also works on the Billion Capture+ s favor is that the device runs on near-stock Android version. With no unnecessary UI weighing the device, the overall performance seemed quite smooth. The company has also promised that the device will be receiving Android Oreo update very soon.

flipkart-billion-capture-plus-bgr-2Interestingly, the smartphone comes preloaded with Smartron s tronX app. Via this app, users will get unlimited cloud storage. Here you will be able to store photos, videos, messages, call logs, contacts and more, and access them easily. Speaking of storage, there are 32GB and 64GB options. We got the 64GB variant for review, and right out of the box there is about 58GB available for users. There is however an option to expand the memory up to 128GB using a microSD card. Flipkart has opted for a hybrid setup whereby you can either use two SIM cards or a combination of one SIM card and a microSD card.

Among the talking points is no doubt the dual-camera setup at the back. The Billion Capture+ comes with a combination of 13-megapixel RGB sensor and a 13-megapixel monochrome sensor. Together both sensors will ensure photos that are high on quality and details. The dual-camera setup also allows one to shoot photos with DSLR-like bokeh effects.

flipkart-billion-capture-plus-bgr-5In the short time with the smartphone, camera performance seemed adequate (considering the price tag). I will however reserve my judgements until we have reviewed the smartphone. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel snapper for selfies and video calls. There s a fingerprint sensor placed at the back, which is quite quick to unlock the device from sleep. Alternatively, the sensor can also be used to click selfies. In both the cases, the sensor worked well, and the placement is such that it can be easily reached when holding the device in one hand.

Making sure everything ticks is a 3,500mAh battery underneath. On paper, the battery seems a tad small when you consider the likes of the Redmi Note 4 and Ten.or G featuring 4,000mAh and above batteries. Flipkart is promising battery backup of over seven hours, and there is also support for Quick Charge. We will comment on the actual battery life in our upcoming review.

flipkart-billion-capture-plus-bgr-4In the short time I spent with Flipkart s Billion Capture+, there s not much to complain about. On paper, the smartphone seems capable of competing against smartphones from the likes of Xiaomi or Lenovo. But a lot will depend upon the smartphone s real-world performance.

Then there is also the case of the brand itself. The Billion Capture+ no doubt has the advantage of the Flipkart brand, but it remains to be seen if that is enough to entice consumers. The likes of the Redmi Note 4 quite simply dominates this space, and has the advantage of being available via online as well as offline channels.

We will soon be reviewing the new Flipkart Billion Capture+ smartphone. Until then, stay tuned to BGR India.
