With his expertise in mobile technology, Soni was able to enhance Flipkart’s product design capabilities, and hired a robust tech team as well. He had also spearheaded Flipkart’s features like Ping and image search projects.

Soni is among the latest high-profile exits, after Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal, and chief business officer Ankit Nagori quit Flipkart earlier this year. These exits triggered a major reshuffle, which saw Binny Bansal getting elevated to the CEO position.

The news comes at a time, when Flipkart is facing stiff competition from the likes of Snapdeal and Amazon India. While it is still the clear market leader, it has seen its valuation fall to somewhere close to $11 billion recently. Going forward, it aims to sell goods worth $12 billion, and is also said to be looking at raising around $1 billion in order to expand its business.

It’s rivals like Amazon are said to be investing up to Rs 1,980 crore in its Indian operations, while Alibaba has invested in commerce companies like Snapdeal and Paytm.
