Flipkart is all set to launch its range of tablets on Thursday, June 26. The online retailer has started sending out a cryptic invite to the media in the form of a vial filled with pills, which signifies tablets. BGR India has received the invite. Flipkart is expected to launch the tablets under its own DigiFlip brand name.
There is little known about the tablets but BGR India has learned that Flipkart has tied up with chipset vendor MediaTek for the project. The tablets will run on MediaTek’s chipsets and if we were to guess, are most likely to be priced below Rs 10,000.
About 4.14 million tablets were shipped into India last year, according to IDC with Samsung, Micromax and Apple making the top three tablet vendors. While that was a 56 percent increase over shipments in 2012, it is worrying that shipments declined in the second half of 2013 when compared to the first half of the year. The rise in popularity of phablets is also proving to be dampner in tablet shipments and sales.
“The popularity of phablets has in fact crossed over the demand for 7-inch tablets. For a price conscious market like India, it is about owning a combination device, meeting the needs with one device instead of two,” said, Karan Thakkar, senior market analyst with IDC.
It also needs to be seen how Flipkart handles the after sales service for these tablets. Probably the experience of working with Motorola in India would have given them insights about handling service centres and it won’t be surprising if it uses the same network.
