Many people argue that despite the new iPhones that Apple has released and the new technology that it supports, the iPhone 5s will always be a memorable device by the company, considering a radical new design change it saw with the Touch ID. Plus, except for 3D Touch, split screen or dual-camera, the iPhone 5s is compatible with most new features and it still supports the latest iOS. And, if you look up the price tag of the device right now, it’s less than 1/4th of the latest iphone. (It is also one of the last Apple devices that Steve Jobs worked on, so essentially, you can sense a lot nostalgia with the iPhone 5s.) So why shouldn’t anyone go for it? And then there are people who argue that after two generation of phones being introduced after that, with one subsequent upgrade in the ‘s’ series with iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, why would anyone want to go back to buying the almost-four-year-old device. However, there is a new $50 product available on AliExpress that may answer both these questions. What if I tell you that for a bit of patience, a pair of steady hands and for $50, you can convert your old iPhone 5s to look exactly like the new iPhone 7 (just smaller in size)? The same matte black finish, the same rounded edges, the camera bump and antenna lines. And even if you don’t already own an iPhone 5s, but you always fancied the new iPhone 7, well this still isn’t a bad deal. If you look it up right now, Amazon India is selling the Space Grey iPhone 5s (16GB) for Rs 15,999. So, if you do the math, about Rs 16,000 for the device and $50 (which is another Rs 3,400) for the kit, you would have yourself a compact little iPhone 7 for about Rs 20,000. Thanks to some of the Chinese smartphone part makers listed on AliExpress, there are a few kits available that let you transform your old iPhone 5s into an “iPhone 7 mini.” A Reddit user igenno was intrigued by these kits and decided to buy one and try it out. And the result is undoubtedly impressive.
Apple’s iPhone 5s design was iconic at the time, but times change. The newer rounded look of the iPhone 6, 6s and 7 has grown to become far more popular in recent years, so popular that Apple has now reused it not once but twice.
The Redditor says that he has some experience with iPhone repair, and the entire process took him about three hours from start to finish. He used this iFixit guide to help him, and he used all of the tools recommended in that guide. He says that the result is “sexy,” and that the aluminum looks and feels just like the aluminum Apple uses on the real iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. It’s not really as complicated as it sounds, you can follow the Redditor’s thread for details.
However, do note, keeping aside the good looks, the Redditor did point out a problem he faced due to the conversion. According to the post, the reception has been degraded by what he believes to be 15 to 20 percent following the conversion.
