Former Apple CEO John Sculley launches Obi Mobiles smartphone brand in India

obi-mobilesFormer Apple CEO, John Sculley has launched his smartphone brand called Obi in India. BGR India had first exclusively reported about Sculley’s plans to launch smartphones in India. Obi will initially have smartphones between Rs 5,000 and Rs 8,000. The brand is being funded by Singapore-based Inflexionpoint, which will initially invest $20 million in the business, CNBC TV18 reports. Sculley is looking at margins around 20 percent thanks to a very frugal expense model. He expects to sell a million units and be profitable within five months. He says Obi will launch smartphones that will be bundled with value added services, though there is no clarity on the kind of services. The company has a website – obimobiles.com – but at the moment it is just a placeholder site at the moment and does not have any information about the phones.

The brand is being headed by Ajay Sharma, who was the country head for HTC in India and was heading Micromax’s smartphone division before heading to Obi.

An earlier report had suggested that Inflexipoint-owned company in India called Iris Computers will distribute the smartphones in the country via its branches and vendors. Singapore-based Dragon Technology, on the other hand, will get these smartphones manufactured in China and supply them to Iris.
