Apple being one of the biggest brands in the world, is surprisingly non-existent on the social media. That is however going to change with the Cupertino-based giant hiring Musa Tariq, the former head of social media at Nike, as its new Digital Marketing Director , 9To5Mac reports. As mentioned above, Apple doesn t have a big presence on social media, barring a couple of accounts for iTunes and personal accounts for the company s executives. Unlike other leading brands, Apple hasn t seen a need to interact with its customers to encourage them to buy its products. That is however set to change with the hiring of Tariq. One of the first things he could do is start Twitter and Facebook accounts for the official Apple brand.
Prior to joining Apple, Tariq was head of social media at Nike since 2012. Before that however he worked as an ad executive at Burberry and was named director of social media for the brand in 2011, which was then run by current Apple retail chief, Angela Ahrendts.
Apple has seen its growth being affected with increased competition from other brands and has also cut ties with its longtime ad agency TBWA/Chiat/Day and its TBWA/Media Arts Lab, which could have triggered this change in social strategy.
