Multi-platform play has been the go to for many game franchises, and has worked out fine. And now, Fortnite has announced that the game is coming on mobile devices. The blog reads, On phones and tablets, Fortnite is the same 100-player game you know from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Mac. It further reads, In partnership with our friends at Sony, Fortnite Battle Royale will support Cross Play and Cross Progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and eventually Android. In case you noticed the first list mentions Xbox, but the second does not, and this is because Sony is still not quite ready to let their PlayStation Network mingle with Xbox users.
In a happy incident back in September last year, a bug in the game caused players from Xbox One and PS4 play together. This was promptly shut down by developers Epic who said it was a mistake.
And now, since the publication of the blog and not mentioning Xbox in the cross-platform list, Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox One users will be able to participate in the cross-platform games.
Microsoft has historically not been the one to turn down all the cross-platform requests. And that may be because Microsoft has more to gain than to lose by letting Xbox One players play with PlayStation ones. Sony on the other hand, has the significantly larger user base and has been holding onto its superiority in numbers.
Talking about this present predicament, Sony had to say that it has online safety concerns and player experience in mind when they shy away from cross-platform integration.
In summary, no we are still not seeing Xbox players playing with PlayStation friends anytime soon.
