Freedom 251 launched in India: 10 important things you need to know about 'India's most affordable smartphone'

A Noida-based company has launched Freedom 251, the cheapest smartphone in India. Here are 10 things you should know about the smartphone.

Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will officially launch what is being touted as India’s most affordable smartphone, the Freedom 251, at an event in Delhi later today. Developed by Noida-based Ringing Bells, this smartphone has entry-level specifications and features, but the talking point is clearly the unbelievable price tag — Rs 251. Following are the 10 most important things that you need know about the Freedom 251. Also Read - World's cheapest smartphone 'Freedom 251' maker Mohit Goel arrested by Delhi police

Price: While we have gotten used to Android smartphones getting cheaper day-by-day, the Freedom 251 comes as a huge surprise. While we are awaiting the official launch, the company website has revealed that the smartphone is priced at Rs 251. We will have to wait till later today to see how the company has managed to keep the price at this rock-bottom level. Also Read - Two arrested for cheating Ringing Bell of Rs 3 crore

How to buy: While details are scarce at the moment, the official website says that registrations kick off tomorrow morning at 6:00AM. The registration window will remain open till February 21, 8:00PM. As per reports, the company has promised to ship the smartphone in large quantities by June.

Warranty: Ringing Bell is providing a standard one year warranty on the Freedom 251. Furthermore, the company also says that after-sales service will be provided through its network of more than 650 centers. “This warranty extends for a period of 12 months for the host unit, 6 months for battery and charger, and 3 months for earphone commencing from the date of purchase,” the website says.

Operating System: The smartphone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system. The company has also preloaded the device with a bunch of apps including the likes of Women Safety, Swachh Bharat, Fisherman, Farmer, Medical, WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube among others.

Display: With HD displays becoming a common thing these days, a smartphone with a qHD resolution display is really exciting. but then at this price tag, you cannot be expecting a lot. It is still better than the lower WVGA or FWVGA resolution displays. A qHD resolution IPS display at 4-inches should be decent enough, and shouldn’t give many reasons to complain.

Power: First time smartphone users generally look for smartphones that let them surf the Internet and social media, watch videos on YouTube and chat on WhatsApp. With a 1.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor and 1GB of RAM, these apps should run comfortably.

Connectivity: At this price point we expect very basic connectivity. But the smartphone exceeds our expectations by having 3G support. The Freedom 251 is undoubtedly the cheapest 3G smartphone in the market.

Memory: The smartphone comes with 8GB internal storage, which is again just about enough to load basic apps and some multimedia content. If that is not sufficient, you can insert a microSD card to expand the internal storage. Ironically, microSD cards will cost you more than the smartphone itself.

Camera: Instead of opting for a single camera like some ultra-affordable smartphones have done, the Freedom 251 has two. At the back is a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera, while up front is a VGA selfie camera.

Battery: Making sure everything ticks is a 1,450mAh battery underneath. Taking into account the relatively low resolution display and low powered processor, the battery should ideally last a day on a single charge.
