After having launched the world’s cheapest smartphone, Freedom 251, Ringing Bells has announced plans to launch the cheapest HD LED TV in India. Pricing of the HD LED TV is expected to be less than Rs 10,000 and the company claims it already has one lakh units in stock. An official launch is expected to take place in the first week of July. These will be the cheapest television sets in India and will be available for less than Rs 10,000. Within two days, the delivery would be made and we would sell them online, Ringing Bells CEO Mohit Goel told IANS. Earlier this year an unknown Noida-based company ‘Ringing Bells’ had taken the market by storm by announcing the world’s cheapest 3G smartphone, the Freedom 251. Priced at Rs 251, the Freedom 251 is said to be Ringing Bells’ contribution to the government’s Digital India and Make in India initiatives. But shortly after, the company was certified as a ‘scam’ by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for its dubious business practices. The Telecom Ministry had asked the Income Tax Department to probe Ringing Bells’ financial standing.
Interestingly, the Freedom 251 shown at the launch event was a shoddy rebranded version of the Adcom Ikon 4 smartphone. Adcom had disclosed that it had sold units to Ringing Bells for Rs 3,600 each and threatened a legal action. Ringing Bells played down the allegations saying the device was only intended to use the Adcom units as a prototype.
In the meantime, Ringing Bells also confirmed that two lakh Freedom 251 smartphones are ready for shipping, which will begin from June 30, as promised. After a long stretch of doubtful claims and controversies, it is really difficult to trust Ringing Bells. We will have to wait and watch to find out whether the company manages to deliver the smartphones.
