Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends 2017 report is out and India finds a special place across segments for the rapid pace at which the population is embracing the internet. One of the notable highlights is that India is now the number one global market based on the time spent on the Android platform. Now, there are a lot of factors which go into making the platform so popular amongst Indians, including the number of app installs and their composition. Given that the internet penetration is still at 27 percent as compared to global standards, global companies are squarely focused on offering lighter apps which are able to function even on slower bandwidth. Unsurprisingly, WhatsApp stands at the number one position. The messaging app boasts over a billion monthly active users globally and over 200 million monthly active users as of February, 2017. It has stayed undeterred from its top position on both the Google Play Store and the Internet Trends 2017 report from the last year. 2. Facebook Messenger
At number two is Facebook’s another entity, Messenger. Although the parent Facebook app drove Messenger away as a standalone app and however, cumbersome it may seem to users, they still have it as a mostly quiet but an existing app on their smartphones. The Wi-Fi based file-transfer app from China is the third most popular app in India. It was ranked number 5 last year and this year has climbed up to one of the leading positions. Call it the rise in the number of spam calls or the sheer popularity of the app as a caller identification but a social messaging app in disguise, Truecaller witnessed a significant rise in its global position on Android devices this year. 6. UC Browser
Backed by Chinese social networking giant Alibaba, UC Browser also faced a downfall in popularity as it tumbled two spots from number 4 last year. 7. MX Player

The leading ‘Made in India’ app for on-demand video streaming ranks number 8 on the report. However, Hotstar‘s position has come down from last year’s sixth position. This could be attributed to the advent of services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
The second and the only Indian-origin app to make it to the list this year is the JioTV. Backed by the current telecom leader in the country, Reliance Jio, the app supports over 400 channels. What also attributes to its success is that off lately a lot of 4G VoLTE-enabled smartphones come bundled with the Jio subscription and the JioTV app is part of the package.
10. Facebook Lite
Lastly, but not least, the lite version of the Facebook app manages to stay on the list of top ten apps thanks to the speed and performance it offers. Aimed at offering a seamless experience even with slower connections, the service recently announced that it crossed the 200 million users milestone with over 184 million monthly active users in India alone.
