Analyzing online shopping of over 100 million users across India, Flipkart has thrown up some interesting statistics on this year s smartphone and smart wearable sales. So, the statistics suggest that affordable 4G smartphone were the most popular this year, be it from domestic or international brands. To be more specific, Flipkart also revealed a list of the top five best selling smartphones of 2016. According to the e-commerce platform, Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Moto E3 Power, Lenovo K5, and Samsung J5 were the most popular smartphones this year. And Lenovo, Xiaomi, Samsung, Motorola, and LeEco became the most favorite smartphone brands.
Additionally, Flipkart revealed that Delhi NCR leads with most mobile phone sales amongst the top metro cities in the country, followed closely by Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. Also, Guwahati and Jorhat in North East India were first time entrants to the top gainers list, and amongst Tier 2 cities Mysore, Salem, and Tirupur from South India led sales in the smartphones category this year.
However, if you see it region-wise, South India yet again emerged as the most tech-savvy region, accounting for over 35 percent sales, while North stood at 28 percent, West at 22 percent, and East India at 15 percent. Besides smartphones, the Internet of Things (IOT) category of smart bands and smartwatches saw tremendous growth in 2016, growing over 500 percent from 2015. Top sellers in this category were Apple, Motorola, and Samsung.
The popularity of smartphones in India, as clearly indicated by #FlipTrends, highlight the shift consumers are making towards 4G enabled smartphones. Today consumers are opting for brands and models that could not just offer them the features, but were smart on the pocket as well, Ajay Yadav, the Head of Mobiles at Flipkart said.
This added interest towards affordable 4G smartphones has been continuing since last year, when once again, affordable 4G smartphones were the most sought after ones. According to Flipkart, the Lenovo A6000 Plus and Lenovo K3 Note were the top two most popular smartphones in 2015. These best-sellers were closely followed by Moto G (third generation), Xiaomi Mi 4i, Redmi Note 4G and Moto E (second generation). Also in the list were Samsung Galaxy On7, Samsung Galaxy J7, Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 and Asus Zenfone 5. These trends hint at cost conscious consumers in the country. Both 2015 and 2016 trend has budget friendly smartphone making to the bestseller charts on Flipkart, with Xiaomi, Moto and Samsung remaining constant through both years.
