Fujifilm releases low-width, low cost FinePix J40 point-and-shooter

Point and shoot cameras these days are getting more pocket-friendly, both in terms of price and volume, and Fujifilm has a camera that fits this mould – the FinePix J40.  At just 20mm thickness, the J40 can slip into most pockets quite easily and for its price tag of Rs 6490,  it packs in some very respectable specs for a simple point-and-shoot device – a 12.2 MP lens, 3x optical zoom and a 3 inch LCD on the back. And while prosumer camera users might snigger at those, we must confess to being impressed at seeing features like panoramic shooting mode (take three shots in a row and the camera will stitch them together), face detection, picture stabilisation and automatic scene recognition at this price point. All that in a body that does not look too bad (check the pic). Our only complaint:  although the camera supports SD/SDHC memory cards, there is no mention of any bundled cards with the camera – the release rather hilariously says that “there is an extra 10MB of internal memory so you don’t have to worry about filling up your memory card every time.” Yeah, sure! That apart – and we can sure you can wrangle a deal with your friendly retailer for a memory card – the J40 seems  a very good deal for those wanting to do nothing more than basic pointing and shooting, with some decent features thrown in.
