Future Apple Watch bands could show notifications, send alerts

These Apple Watch smart bands could give medical reminders, notifications, activity information, and more to users.

Apple wants to make its smartwatch more useful. The company has reportedly filed a patent for Apple Watch bands which will add more functionality to the smart wearable. Currently, the bands on smartwatches and fitness wearables do nothing other than attaching the smart module onto the wearer s wrist. Apple s patent talks about technology which will bring some of the watch s functionality to the band, which might leave room for more features to be embedded into the watch. The patent (number 20170084133) for indicators for wearable electronic devices, envisions future Apple Watch bands to come with features which would allow the band to give medical reminders, notifications, health alerts, activity information, biometric information, and more. It could also display information about the status of an activity performed by the Apple Watch such as status of a file download, remaining playback time of a media file, distance remaining to a destination, status of battery, number of unread messages, and more. Now, this could essentially allow the Apple Watch to be more battery efficient, as users won t require waking up their smartwatch to check such information. To display all of such information, Apple will be using an illuminated indicator on a small portion of the band, AppleWorld.Today reports. It isn t the first time that Apple is mulling more functional bands for its smartwatch. In April last year, the company was rumored to be working on Apple Watch bands with modular capabilities. The patent filed in 2015 Modular functional band links for wearable devices, reveals the capabilities of the interchangeable smart bands that will allow Apple to introduce new hardware when it wants to add certain features to the smartwatch.

Some features listed on the patent application include a blood pressure monitor, a thermometer, speakers, a camera, SIM card module, GPS module or even additional battery power. This essentially means the smart band will work as a separate multi-functional component for the Apple Watch. In a separate patent, the company explores the idea of moving the haptic motor into the band itself, allowing for a thinner Apple Watch. Given that these purported features are but ideas mentioned in patents, these may or may not lead to a final product. Meanwhile, adding to its existing line of not-so-smart Apple Watch bands, the company launched a new lineup of bands this week including a wide stripe Woven Nylon band, standalone Nike Sport Bands and Apple Watch Herm s bands in new colors.
