Future Oppo smartphones could boast under-display camera, patent reveals

The upper part will have a display with a flexible polymer layer and a low refresh rate.

Oppo has been granted a patent for an under-display camera module by World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). After Samsung, Oppo is the second smartphone company to have applied for an under-display camera module patent that will help the company get rid of display notch, and expensive motor parts for sliding camera module.

Oppo Mobile Telecommunications filed a patent under 'Electronic device and display screen' to WIPO in February and the patent got published on November 1, 2018, reported LetsGoDigital (via MSPoweruser).

The Oppo patent describes a full screen smartphone with a camera under the display, and it can contain a single hole or two for selfie cameras. As seen in the patent documentation, the screen will be divided into two parts. The upper part of the phone will have a display with a flexible polymer layer and a low refresh rate, which will help in high-quality images because if the screen continues to refresh, the lens will experience problems. It will also include an optical sensor and a receiver in the upper part, and the area can also serve to display shortcut icons.

Similar to Oppo, there are already reports of Samsung having developed a new way to incorporate the front camera under the display. This is seen as a big technology breakthrough for developing smartphones with edge-to-edge display design without including a notch. It is not clear whether these new patented technologies will appear on the Galaxy S10 next year but Samsung could bring new features to mark a decade of the Galaxy S series.
