Gionee Elife E8: Hands On and First Impressions: Great specs, but…

Gionee s latest flagship smartphone, Elife E8, has launched in India. The latest Gionee flagship is loaded with new and improved features and specifications as compared to the Elife E7. While there are upgrades over the predecessor, Gionee is also taking on the competition with high end specifications such as 3GB of RAM, 64 GB internal storage (expandable) and MediaTek Helio X10 SoC and its biggest highlight 24-megapixels rear camera. We were present at the Elife E8 official India launch event today and did manage to spend some time with the latest Gionee flagship smartphone. As said earlier, the major highlight of the phone is the camera. Gionee during its presentation said it wants to deliver the best camera phone. Also, it had the noted photographer Raghu Rai endorsing the camera capability of the Elife E8. Well, the E8 sports a 24-megapixels (improved from the 16-megapixels on the Elife E7) camera. Gionee claims the camera is capable of delivering images with 120-megapixels resolution. It comes with a scene recognition with Image+ feature for 120MP quality images on a 24MP camera. Gionee also compared the OIS capability of the E8 with the iPhone 6S Plus. Also Read - Gionee K6 with triple rear cameras, 4,350mAh battery launched: Price, specifications

The rear camera comes with different modes for photography such as Real HDR. The camera features 5696 x 4272 pixels, optical image stabilization, phase detection autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash. The front camera is an 8-megapixels one. We briefly used the camera and it appeared fine. But, given the harsh indoor lighting conditions at the launch event, we will refrain from giving a verdict on the camera quality right now. Stay tuned for a detailed review.

Talking about the form-factor, the Gionee Elife E8 joins the growing crowd of large-screen smartphones. The display is quite large at 6-inches, but it is a Super AMOLED one and supports 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution and 491 ppi. Gionee has also made efforts to up the design ante as the phone features metal framing and feels quite slim and light for its size. On the rear, the phone has the fingerprint reader placed below the rear camera. Placement of the fingerprint reader reminds us of the Honor 7, which launched in India yesterday.

The volume rocker, power / lock and camera buttons are placed on the right side of the device, comfortably within the reach. On the front you have the display, front camera on the top and touchscreen buttons for tasks, home and return on the bottom. Overall, the Elife E8 feels trendy and is perhaps one of the good looking phablets.

The UI of the Gionee Elife E8 felt familiar and smoother. The Amigo 3.1 is based on Android 5.1. Gionee is likely to update the phone to Android Marshmallow but no clear information was given about it. Speaking about the performance, Gionee is now perhaps targeting the specs-crazy audience by bumping up the RAM to 3GB and bringing MediaTek s Helio X10 SoC clocked at 2GHz. Wait for our detailed review for more insight on the performance part.

Other important features of the phone include 64GB ROM, which is expandable. It gives the phone an edge over the closest rivals OnePlus 2 and forthcoming Nexus 6P, which comes with 32GB/64GB and 128GB options. Meanwhile, you can check out our detailed specs comparison between Elife E8, OnePlus 2 and Nexus 6P.

Overall, the Elife E8 looks to be a promising device, and it appears the company is trying to hit all the right notes to deliver a competitive product in the Indian smartphone market, which already is awash with high speed mid-range and budget smartphones. One of the biggest hurdles for the Gionee Elife E8, we believe, is going to be the price. Priced at approximately Rs. 35,000, the Elife E8 will be competing against a range of below Rs. 25,000 powerful phones such as the One Plus 2 and Zenfone 2.

Motorola s Moto X Style, which launched today, also looks to be a decent competitor. Will customers be interested in shelling out about Rs. 35,000 for a Gionee phone?

Meanwhile, check out the Elife E8 in pictures from today s launch event.
