Gionee is all set to unveil a new smartphone on July 26 at its event in China. Called the Gionee M6, one of the crucial features of the smartphone is the encryption chip for data protection. The on chip data protection will safeguard all your content stored inside the phone be it call records, photos, notes, documents and more. The company also claims that the on chip data protection offered by Gionee M6 won t be able to match by current smartphones that are available out there. The Chinese manufacturer has taken potshots at Apple s hardware-based Touch ID system. In case, a user chooses to hide the data and the Android system gets hacked, the hacker may be able to locate the files, but as everything is encrypted, it won t be visible, the company says. Most smartphone companies, specifically those building Android phones, tend to focus their privacy and security efforts on software, while others, like Apple, turn to hardware, with Touch ID being the prime example. Despite its efficacy, Apple s Touch ID is still lacking when it comes to what is stored on the smartphone as soon as someone manages to pass through the lock screen, information can be freely viewed, Gionee said.
However, it is not really clear how the company plans to implement it. Based on the leaks, the Gionee M6 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm s Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor, but Qualcomm hasn t mentioned about the feature either. It will be interesting to see how exactly the encryption chip for data protection will work. Other smartphones have the ability to lock individual apps, which only open when you use a password, PIN, pattern or via the fingerprint sensor. For the record, even Apple has a secure enclave within the device’s SoC, where it stores the fingerprints.
Interestingly, when Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon 820 flagship mobile chipset, it had mentioned about a Smart Protect real-time malware protection feature that is built into the chipset. While the feature was expected to be present in high-end smartphones running on the Snapdragon 820 chipset, it s surprising that manufacturers aren t talking about the same.
Gionee M6 specifications
The smartphone was recently spotted on TENAA, which has revealed some of its crucial specifications and features. The Gionee M6 is expected to boast a 5.5-inch full HD (1080p) AMOLED display. Under the hood, Qualcomm s Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor (four Cortex-A72 cores + four Cortex-A53 cores) paired with 4GB of RAM is likely to be in tow. Featuring 32GB of onboard storage, there is a slight uncertainty as to whether or not it will boast an expandable storage option.
Gionee M6 features
For casual photography lovers, a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and an 8-megapixel selfie camera is expected. The smartphone is also expected to boast a massive 5,000mAh battery non-removable along connectivity options such as dual SIM 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth and GPS. On the software front, the smartphone is likely to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box.
While Gionee is also rumored to launch a Plus variant of the smartphone, details about the same are scarce at moment.
