Gionee has sent out invites for an event in India which will take place in August 22. The invite notes “#SelfieWithFlash”, which clearly hints that Gionee is going to launch a selfie-focused smartphone, which would come with flash for front facing camera. Right now there aren’t a lot of details about the smartphone as yet, but reports suggest the smartphone could be part of Gionee’s Elife S series.

With Gionee’s launch of its selfie-centric smartphone, the company will join the bandwagon of smartphone companies, which have recently launched some. The most recent selfie-centric smartphone to hit the market it the Oppo F1s which comes loaded with a 16-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and 1/3.1-image sensor and features Beautify 4.0, selfie panorama, photo filters, screen flash, voice command, gesture shot and more. This is a selfie-packed smartphone aimed at all selfie lovers but comes at a price tag of Rs 17,990, which seems to be bit on higher side.

If we talk about selfie-centric smartphones that made a mark in the selfie category, then we can pick out HTC Desire EYE which features a 13-megapixel selfie camera with BSI sensor. The other smartphone is the Sony Xperia C4 Dual featuring a 5-megapixel selfie camera with Exmor R image sensor and LED flash. Even Asus has launched an Asus Zenfone Selfie smartphone. HTC also improved its flagship smartphone, HTC 10, by adding OIS support.

Looking at the current state of smartphone companies aiming to bring out the best selfie-centric smartphones, Gionee is likely to follow the trend with higher megapixel count and most probably better sensors. It is likely to come with several preloaded beauty modes to make images appear smoother and better. Right now, it’s not clear whether the smartphone will have the OIS support or not. We’ll just have to wait till August 22 to see what Gionee has in store for all the selfie lovers.
