Google‘s developer preview for Wear OS is out and one of the biggest changes that the latest iteration brings to the Android wearables is the ability to preserve battery life. Until now, Wear OS, formerly called Android Wear, had no way to allow the user to monitor the battery consumption pattern. However, that will change with the upcoming update. It is to be noted that the Wear OS developer preview is currently available exclusively for the Huawei Watch 2 Bluetooth and the Huawei Watch 2 Classic Bluetooth. The developer preview needs to be flashed on the smartwatch manually, and evidently, is not meant for consumer use. With the Wear OS, the background activity of apps will be restricted. In its developers’ blog, Google explains, “To improve power, apps will no longer be allowed to run in the background unless the watch is on the charger.” This will essentially allow the wearable to run for a tad longer. The exceptions to this rule include the watch faces and complications which the user chooses to run in the background.

In addition to that, Wear OS will also turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular radios when the watch is detected to be off the body for an extended period of time. The feature is to be rolled out gradually even to the developer community, in order to perfect it before a mass rollout. Further, the device will no longer automatically connect to Wi-Fi when it is disconnected from Bluetooth. The exceptions include if an app is requesting a high bandwidth network or if the watch is on the charger.

Other features with the Wear OS include a new Dark UI system theme, which will improve readability of content on a given wearable. The dark background for the notifications stream and system launcher is now the default theme and will improve glanceability for wear apps.
