Over the weekend, Google teased a bunch of names for Android M in a short video teaser. Moments ago, it has finally revealed that the M in Android M, is Marshmallow. This follows Google s traditions to name Android versions after desserts, starting from the first version called Cupcake. This was followed by Donut, clair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop and now Marshmallow. In a blog post announcing Android Marshmallow, Android Product Manager Jamal Eason wrote,
Whether you like them straight out of the bag, roasted to a golden brown exterior with a molten center, or in fluff form, who doesn t like marshmallows? We definitely like them! Since the launch of the M Developer Preview at Google I/O in May, we ve enjoyed all of your participation and feedback. Today with the final Developer Preview update, we’re introducing the official Android 6.0 SDK and opening Google Play for publishing your apps that target the new API level 23 in Android Marshmallow.
Google took the wraps off Android M at I/O earlier this year. The latest OS update brings in a bunch of improvements as well as new features. In addition to improving performance, battery life and security, the new features include Native tap-to-wake support, Dismiss all button, Backup service, Standalone Calculator app, Night mode, as well as offline mode. The Googlers behind the Android M teaser Nat and Lo have also released a video on how the Android Marshmallow statue was made and placed at the special Android Lawn.
