Google said in a statement that it was sorry for “inappropriate user-created content” and that they were working to remove it as soon as possible. “Handling spam is a complex issue and we’re continuously working on ways to improve our systems, including new ways of preventing, detecting and taking down incorrect edits,” Google told TechCrunch. The statement added that “the vast majority of users who edit our maps provide great contributions, such as mapping places that have never been mapped before, or adding new business openings or address changes.”
Google spokesperson Mara Harris said that they are improving on how to “detect, prevent and handle bad edits.”
The visual that has now been removed was located in Pakistan near the city of Rawalpindi, and added to Google Maps through Map Maker, a feature that allows users to add content and additional information to Google Maps.
