Google today launched its AR/VR learning app called Google Expeditions for everybody. The app was initially launched for Android in 2017, but has only come to iOS devices now. Being an AR/VR app it is only compatible with devices supporting iOS ARKit or Android ARCore.

Google Expedition was originally a VR application, which allowed teachers to take their students on VR field trips using the Google Cardboard. The app enabled teachers to act as guides and control the VR experience for the children. It supported about 200 different expeditions, which included tours to historical landmarks, underwater dives and trips to outer space. Each trip came along with a description, learning points and even some questions.

A year after that, Google added the AR features to Google Expeditions, which allowed students to use the augmented reality in their classroom. It also presented an immersive learning experience, where students did not have to wear VR headsets. However, the app was part of an AR Pioneer Program and was only rolled out to certain schools and institutes. But now, Google has made the app available for everybody.

Along with the release, Google has also updated the Expeditions app. It now carries, 100 AR and 800 VR tours that have been created by the Oxford University Press, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and more. The app now also allows users to save tours and even go on solo expeditions. In addition to launching the app, Google is also offering schools an opportunity to purchase the first Expeditions VR kits.
