Google bids goodbye to the menu button on Android, asks developers to follow suit

Ever since the launch of Android 3.0 Honeycomb, it has been quite clear that Google has been moving toward a button-less interface for Android. With the launch of the Ice Cream Sandwich powered Galaxy Nexus, this has become even more apparent as the device ditches hardware buttons, for software variants. In a blog post on Android Developers Forum, Google has retreated its philosophy and says that developers should ‘Say goodbye to the menu button’ and should place all key interface commands on the ‘Action Bar’ which has been there since Honeycomb. Google is propagating this for the sake of general usability and uniformity of interface on Android app, a well recognized criticism of the platform. While Google is pushing for this major interface change for the newer build of Android, it still maintains legacy support for the older versions of Android which don’t feature the action bar. Google touts that developers can add the interface commands inside the ‘Action Bar’ with the addition a few line of code whilst maintaining hardware button support for the older versions of the OS.
