After launching YouTube Gaming for web in August last year, the Android and iOS app is now available to download in India. A competitor to Amazon’s Twitch, the service extensively focuses on gaming content. With more than 25,000 dedicated game pages, the app supports recorded gameplay videos and live streams. The YouTube Gaming platform gives hardcore gamers an option to broadcast their gameplay on the web. Also Read - Google redesigning its Search results on mobile for better user experience
Some of the popular games that users can stream include Dota 2, League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Metal Gear Solid V, NBA 2K15, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft and Until Dawn among others. The YouTube Gaming app allows users to easily switch between live streams and recorded sessions. Also Read - Google threatens to stop its Search engine in Australia, govt responds
Users can also watch reviews, chat with other users, and explore games more deeply with walkthroughs. The platform also allows users the ability to rewind and catch-up with the live stream, something that’s been missing from Amazon’s Twitch. Easy navigation: For the YouTube Gaming app, Google has done away with the sidebar. There are four tabs –- home, game collection, channels and live games. On the home tab, the top section shows live stream of top five games, whereas below that you have the recommended videos. In the games tab, the top section shows your collection of six games and by clicking ‘show all games’ you get to explore popular, trending and recommended live games.
The channels tab shows you all the featured, available and your subscribed channels. The last is the live tab where you can click on individual games and follow the live stream broadcasted by users. You can also watch replays of these games.
Dedicated live streaming button: On the top right corner of the app, you have manage profile button, search and live stream option. Clicking on live stream, you can either ‘record or live stream’ (720p) or SD (480p) content. It will record or stream whatever is going on the screen, be it calls, notifications, and more, whereas the mic will capture audio from the speaker and surroundings.
Floating pop-out player: The Android app supports floating pop-out player which overlays the playback, thus allowing you to simultaneous use other apps. The pop-out player has a smaller resolution and it cannot be resized, which is a bit of a bummer as of now.
Voice Search: When looking for game videos, you also have an option of voice search. YouTube Gaming is built to pull gaming-related content. So, if you voice search for “Call of Duty,” it will show you the videos related to game, and not the music video of Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me MayBe.’
