Google Chromecast users are reportedly facing crashing issues on their Wi-Fi networks. The issue is predominantly faced by users of the Google Home Max smart speaker. Google has acknowledged the issue where the speaker is ‘killing the Wi-Fi network’ for users. Users reported that the Home Max is facing an issue when it is connected to the Wi-Fi network. In order to bring back the network, these users reported that they needed to hard reset the router. Based on the complaints, the issue is claimed to exist in Google’s ‘Cast’ feature and is reportedly affecting Google Home devices in addition to Chromecast. Some users on Reddit (via Gadgets 360) have reported that the issue randomly disables network on devices connected to the wireless network to which the Chromecast is connected. The same issue affects Chromecast Audio as well.
One of the users notes that the issue has existed since December 2017 and a number of router vendors have come out with explanations as to what is causing the devices to malfunction. The TP-Link engineers indicate that the issue exists due to multicast DNS (MDNS) packets that are broadcasted through Google Chromecast and Home in a huge amount and at a very high speed in a short amount of time.
The issue of network connectivity occurs when the device is awakened from the sleep mode. It could exceed more than 100,000 packets in a short amount of time, leading to the router’s primary functions to shut down, including wireless connectivity.
Other router vendors, Linksys and Netgear, have also released updated to fix the network issue. Meanwhile, Google said that it is aware of the issue and will be issuing a patch soon.
